The Hotel Paradise Orchestra at the City Docks
Annapolis City Dock 1 Dock Street, Annapolis, Maryland 21401
Something different is coming to the Annapolis City Dock June 18—The Hotel Paradise Orchestra. It’s a 12-piece band modeled after the ones that played the big hotel ballrooms in the 20’s and 30’s. And it plays that music of that era in the style of that era.
In addition to original arrangements of music from 1920 to 1935, the band plays special arrangements of classics by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and, of course, Baltimoreans Cab Calloway and Eubie Blake written by musical director Jari Villanueva, a retired US Air Force Band musician.
Lynn Summerall, the director emeritus, founded the band in Norfolk, VA, in 1993 and brought the concept with him when he moved back home to Baltimore, using the same instrumental line up of saxes, trumpets, trombones, tuba, banjo, piano drums and two violins and vocalist Janet Paulsen.
The free concert, part of the city of Annapolis Art in Public Places Commission series, starts at 6 p.m. in Susan Campbell Park at the City Dock. There is no rain date. For information on this concert, or the band, call 410-235-1566.
