The Reconstruction Amendments
The Reconstruction Amendments: 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were passed after the Civil War to help African Americans achieve economic and political equality. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery, the 14th Amendment gave citizenship to all people born in the U.S., and the 15th Amendment gave Black males including formerly enslaved individuals the right to vote. Dr. Lester Brooks, Emeritus professor of American history at Anne Arundel Community College, joins us to understand how the Reconstruction Amendments are still relevant today, and why some say they relate to current debates about voting rights, mass incarceration, and economic opportunities.
