You boost your biceps with muscle-building moves and get your sweat on during spin class—but can you make a difference in your facial muscles with simple exercises aptly dubbed as “facial yoga?” Here’s the premise: The muscles in your cheeks, chin, and forehead need a little workout to avoid lines and keep things plump, so contorting them into the facial equivalent of pigeon pose and downward dog does just that. What a beautiful concept, right?
Sad news—the premise isn’t rooted in research. A review of nine studies done on this topic, published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal, concluded that there wasn’t much to go on, stating, “The evidence to date is insufficient to determine whether facial exercises are effective for facial rejuvenation.” In fact, some MDs go even further and say that face yoga might actually increase the formation of wrinkles. Yikes!
So, rest assured, you don’t need to make funny faces in the mirror to keep your skin looking young and fresh. What you can do, however, is try one of these tactics:
