The main drag at Penn State, College Avenue, features a bar called Cafe 210 West. This is my favorite bar of all time, probably due to the number of Friday evenings I spent with a Long Island Iced Tea in hand, listening to the sounds of the local cover band, JR & Natalie. (Yes, they was THE local cover band, though I'm sure others existed...I just never saw them perform).
Cafe, as it's simply known as, is known for its Long Islands, mostly because of how cheap they were. Though the price has since been raised, the Long Islands were just $5 for a 32-ounce pitcher. This wasn't a pitcher to share, they simply plunked a straw in it and sent you on your way.
The good new is that downtown State College is so small, there was never a need to drive anywhere.
But I digress. The point of this story is that whenever I think of Long Islands, I think of Cafe 210, college nights, good music, and good friends. And though I'm fairly positive I would no longer be able to handle a 32-ounce pitcher of Long Islands by myself anymore -- no one warned mehow much worse hangovers get as you age -- it's nice to relax with one every once in a while and wax nostalgic about "the good old days."
