Paging Cher Horowitz! Nineties gals, rejoice! Plaid is back in a big way—just how the group at Beverly Hills High would have wanted it. However, just because today'e fashion is taking inspiration from the trends of yesteryear doesn't mean that you want to look dated when you have done a fab fall plaid coat.
Styling Plaid Properly
A plaid skirt is the perfect transition piece between summer and fall—it's cool enough for the Indian summer weather, but it evokes a traditionally cool-weather image. Here's what to wear: Pair the plaid skirt with booties and a top that complement the colors in the plaid pattern. However, here's what not to do: Don't add a blazer to a plaid skirt, as it reads too schoolgirl-like. If you want to add a jacket, shrug on one that's denim or leather.
If you're not 100 percent on board with the return of plaid, start with an oversized plaid scarf for the autumn months. Matched with a neutral long-sleeved top, classic denim and boots, this is a classic look that will never go out of style.
Rather than mixing patterns—it can be done, but it can go wrong very quickly—mix textures when wearing plaid. If you're donning the pattern in a skirt or pant on the bottom, add a cable-knit sweater on top that both contrasts and complements the plaid. And vice-versa, if the top is plaid, try a neutral/flat design on the bottom.
