It doesn’t matter if your hair is long or short, thick or thin, or curly or straight, whatever hair style you are rocking, odds are that the Maryland summer humidity doesn't let your hair stay how you want it to. We have covered different ways to protect your skin during the summer, but your hair should be protected too. Try some of these tips and tricks to prevent or fix frizzy hair to keep you looking and feeling your best.
Air Dry your Hair
Instead of rubbing your hair dry with a towel, carefully blot it dry. Air-drying is the best way to go, blow drying your hair adds a lot of movement and heat to your hair, allowing it to easily break which causes the fly-aways that frizz easiest in the humidity. If you do blow dry your hair, be sure to use the lowest heat settings and blow down your hair rather than across it. Blow drying across provides volume, but adds puffiness to frizzy hair. Blow drying also removes moisture from hair; the moisture in your hair is what prevents frizzing.
Careful with the Comb
It is second nature to brush your hair after a shower, but lets second guess that next time. Brushing or combing your hair causes friction that breaks the hair cuticle, leaving you with puffy or frizzy hair. Instead, try using either a wide toothed comb or a paddle brush with ball tipped ends to smooth out your post shower hair. Or, even better, comb out your hair with your fingers.
Good Conditioner
Go ahead, I give you permission to spend the money on a nice conditioner. Conditioners help your hair absorb humidity and keep you looking your best. Choose the conditioner that matches your hair best. A smoothing conditioner for straight hair and a curling conditioner for curly hair. Keeping moisture in your hair will help prevent the humidity from getting to you. When you are in the shower, wash the conditioner out using cold water. Cold water causes the hair to contract which keeps the shine and tames the frizz.
Try an Oil
For naturally dry hair, use a little oil as a quick fix to block humidity from your hair. Many hair product companies have a hydrating oil or anti-frizz soothing serum. Keep it in your purse and apply a small amount of oil to your hair when necessary. Remember, add a little at a time. With these oils, a little really does go a long way. It is easier to add more than to remove later. These serums are light weight and can also protect your hair from breakage.
Hold with Hairspray
Next time you go to update your hairspray, look for certain keywords. There are hairsprays made for this time of year. They are labeled with things like “weather-proof”, “no-fizz”, “anti-humidity”. Just like any other product, it may take a few tries to find the one that works best for your hair, but now is the time to try it! These hairsprays will keep your hair exactly how it was when you left your house in the morning.
Pull it Back
If you know that your hair is prone to humidity frizz and you haven't had a chance to find the right products for it yet, grab a cute hair-tie and put it up. After your shower, slick your wet hair back into a cute top knot or pony. You will automatically feel cooler with your hair off your neck anyway.
