Free Mental Health Screenings
Oasis: The Center for Mental Health is now offering free, confidential mental health screenings for the public [beginning Aug. 18].
The screenings are available for those ages 13 and up on a walk-in basis from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday at Oasis’ office at 175 Admiral Cochrane Drive, Suite 110, in Annapolis.
The short written questionnaire takes about 20 minutes to complete and is designed to assess whether therapy for anxiety or depression could be of benefit.
“Early detection creates the opportunity for early treatment to decrease needless suffering from treatable mental illness,” said Kathy Miller, a licensed clinical professional counselor and owner of Oasis.
“Anxiety and depression often go hand-in-hand with substance abuse and can lead to suicide at the extreme. Our aim is to help people get treatment early when it’s most effective,” said Miller.
Minors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for screening. Each screening will be evaluated by a member of Oasis’ staff of clinical psychologists. The new service will be offered through Dec. 31 as a community service to mark Oasis’ 10th anniversary year.
