When we were working at our offices, we found ourselves sitting way longer than what is good for us. But now that most of us are working from home, it has only gotten worse. I have found myself answering a few emails in bed and sitting even more than I had before. Let us help you find little ways to avoid sitting for the whole day and get some more movement into your everyday routine. This is good for you physically for obvious reasons but can also help improve your creative juices and mood by giving you better circulation to your brain.
Adjustable Desk
It is hard for many people to sit in one place for the length of time a work day needs them, so they invest in an adjustable work station. These desks start at just $200 on Amazon and can help you stay more focused, and sitting less, in seconds. You can start your day sitting and once you get restless, just push the chair to the side and lift the desk to the appropriate height for you. It is not great to be on your feet for the whole day, but alternating between sitting and standing can be just what you need.
Drink More Water
There is an endless reason why drinking more water is good for you, but in this case, the water is helping in a different way that you expect. Drinking water reminds you to get up, take a break, and stretch your legs. Simply by drinking water, you will get up to refill the water, maybe go up or down a set of steps to get to the kitchen, and, will force you to get up to go to the bathroom. Assuming you drink even just 3 glasses of water a day, that will get you up and moving at least 3 times to break up your sitting pattern.
Take Your Call for a Walk
Many of us are on the phone, taking calls all day. If it is just an audio call, what is keeping you at your computer? Pace the hall a bit while you are on the phone to get extra steps in and to stretch your legs. Moving around can help trigger a thought or brainstorm better, plus, it can be a little change in scenery.
Stability Ball
Swap your desk chair for a stability ball. The first great thing about a stability ball is that you will naturally bounce on it, giving you an automatic core workout. Your body will have to balance itself on the ball and will engage more muscles than using a normal office chair.
Work Out
Even if you are just sitting answering emails and working on spreadsheets, you can still get a workout in. Invest in an exercise bike foot peddler. These are small, cheap exercise machines that you can place under your desk and use to move your legs during your normal day. You can even throw a resistance band around your legs. Not into cycling? There are under-desk stair steppers, ellipticals, or even a whole treadmill attachment.
