Medical Director, Chesapeake Research Group
Dr. Ira J. Gottlieb is a podiatrist who is the founder, chief clinical researcher and Medical Director at Chesapeake Research Group (CRG), a clinical trial investigative site in Pasadena, Maryland.
Dr. Gottlieb works directly with pharmaceutical companies and clinical research organizations. As the principal investigator on these trials, he is responsible for all aspects of the study on the site level. He is the surgeon that performs the majority of all surgeries relating to the trials, overseeing a large staff of nurses, medical assistants and administrative staff as well as the recruitment of volunteers.
When volunteers agree to participate, they receive a thorough explanation of the study. Once consented, these volunteers are now referred to as “subjects” participating in the study.
At CRG, subjects take part in clinical trials helping ing new pain medications to the public if they get approved by the Food and Drug Association. Participants receive free treatment, testing and post-op care. All surgeries are performed at the onsite Chesapeake Ambulatory Surgery Center. The costs associated with the study are underwritten by the pharmaceutical companies themselves and subjects generally receive a financial stipend for their participation.
As part of their participation, all subjects get a head-to-toe exam (labwork, EKG, etc.). From diagnosis to surgery to rehab (when needed)-and up to 3 days of follow-up care ―all take place under one roof. CRG has all the necessary components to run clinical trials so subjects do not have to run from doctor’s offices to labs, hospitals, or rehab centers.
“Without volunteers, there is no progress,” says Dr. Gottlieb, a past recipient of the Podiatrist of the Year award in Maryland and son of a Washington, D.C. podiatrist to the White House during Dwight Eisenhower’s presidency. “I love clinical research because it is vital to the development and approval of new medications that moves medicine forward and it helps people. It’s very rewarding to know that ‘this is a drug I worked on.’”
