Q. I have severe and painful arthritis in my knees. Can knee replacement surgery provide relief?
A. Knee replacement surgery can provide relief, decrease pain and improve quality of life in many patients. The decision to have knee replacement surgery is an important one and you should discuss it with your orthopedic surgeon. More conservative treatments, particularly if you are suffering from arthritis, include medicines, therapy, and injections. However, if despite good conservative care, your quality of life is starting to deteriorate because of pain and lack of mobility, knee replacement surgery may be what you need to regain the activities that arthritis has taken from you.
