For Dr. Sanjiv K. Saini, medical director for MD Dermatology, some of the most fulfilling and defining moments of his work are formed when his patients share the tell-tale signs of skin cancer with their family and friends. Why? Because these patients help save lives.
Between the practice’s two locations (Edgewater and Lexington Park), Dr. Saini and his colleagues care for thousands of individuals with unique needs each year. Remarkable cases where patients detect life-threatening symptoms in others are not uncommon. Specifically, Dr. Saini recalls a patient who saved his daughter’s life by recognizing unhealthy characteristics of a growth on her eyelid that turned out to be cancer. And, a 19-year-old patient saved his mother’s life by urging her to have her skin checked and mapped. Melanoma was discovered on the woman and the malignant area was successfully treated. MD Dermatology invests in patient education to keep healthy skin habits top of mind.
“Healthy and satisfying results are what matter,” says Dr. Saini. “Within just a few moments of meeting a new patient, our highly-trained physician assistants, Nicole Masson, PA-C, and Nicole Thomas, PA-C can tell if the person is a smoker and how much sun exposure they’ve had over the years. Whether someone is seeking cosmetic treatment or is addressing health concerns, individualized attention and expert care from our staff ensures the best outcomes.”
Throughout the year, patients’ needs typically follow a seasonal variation. During bathing suit season patients frequently request body checks for dangerous moles and skin cancer, and in the colder months the care team treats more cases of dry, uncomfortable skin. Teens and adults, alike, are concerned about treating acne year-round and want to put their best face forward. Area men and women also entrust Dr. Saini’s team to help eliminate fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tones. To offer first-class treatment during each appointment, MD Dermatology maintains state-of-the-art facilities designed for specialized medical and surgical care.
“Oftentimes, patients walk into my office with a specific skin care plan in mind such as, Botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels or laser treatments. But not all individuals are good candidates for these cosmetic procedures,” said Dr. Saini. “With each of our patients, we examine their skin care goals. There is an investment with each regimen and some individuals may not be prepared for multiple days of redness following laser resurfacing, and some may only need better preventative care to improve their appearance. We prescribe a personalized care plan to deliver satisfaction.”
Dr. Saini graduated from George Washington University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, prior to attending the Georgetown University Medical School. He completed his internship in General Surgery at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He also served for the United States Air Force as a General Medicine Officer. He was quickly promoted to Chief of Aerospace Medicine at the United States Air Force Clinic in Los Angeles. Dr. Saini returned to Washington, D.C. to work at Howard University Hospital where he completed his residency in Dermatology. Furthermore, he went on to complete a fellowship in Cosmetic Surgery at Burkes Farber Clinics in Kenner, Louisiana. Dr. Saini has been in private practice since 1995 and is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Medical Association. He is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is currently on staff at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Additionally, Dr. Saini serves a medical director for the South River Ambulatory Center located in Edgewater.
