First Ladies of Fashion
By Becca Newell
We love any excuse to throw on our winter party staples—a sleek shift dress, a solid stiletto, and a swipe of red lipstick.
We know we’re not alone. Everyone has their go-to ensemble fit for the next festive soiree, charitable gala, and family get-together. Holiday attire influenced by runway trends, but with a familiar structure. These wardrobe heroes are timeless and sleek; bold and sophisticated—and always ready to cele ate.
This year, we decided to take some style inspiration from those around us. We invited several ladies within the political sphere to model what they will be wearing out and about this December. They also shared with us their favorite family traditions—the most cherished part of the holiday season. Although, for us, finding the perfect Christmas red lipstick is a close second!

“As Christmas Day—which also happens to be my birthday—approaches, our family always has various tracks of Christmas music playing in the background. Andrea Bocelli is a favorite and Michael Bublé is a holiday staple. Their Christmas albums really get my heart warmed up for the holidays. Also, my husband delights in decorating for Christmas, and has been known to string lights throughout our entire house. Now that we are living in a much bigger residence and he is busy as governor, I'm sure he'll need a little extra help this year from “Santa's elves,” or the staff at Government House. We look forward to hosting our first holiday open house at Government House, which is sure to become another special holiday tradition for us.”

“I've always found family and heritage to be of central importance, especially when it comes to holiday traditions. My husband and I live in a house in Rock Hall that his grandfather built and his father was born and raised in. Jay's mother, now 92, was born on Christmas Day and she and the Jacobs clan, about 27 in number spanning four generations, gather Christmas Eve in our home for a Chinese gift exchange around a real Christmas tree. Lots of laughter and good food fill the evening. I often wonder what Aunt Mary Ellen, Jay's father's sister who was also born and raised in the house, must think as she enjoys the evening here.”

“Coming from a large family … there has never been a time where young children weren't a part of Christmas for me. Christmas eakfast and watching the kids open their presents with such excitement and anticipation has always been one of my favorite parts of the day. After Christmas dinner, card games, and dancing-like-no-one-is-watching in the living room, the younger kids are finally sent off to bed and the older kids go to the movies together. I love being able to spend the day with my siblings and make so many fun memories.”

“The best part of the holiday season is spending time with my family and friends. Since 1984, our family has the tradition of Christmas eakfast at one relative's house and dinner at another relative's house. In between we open presents.”
