Just when we’ve gotten kind of used to skinless, broiled chicken breasts, major research out of England leaves us gobsmacked (Brit-speak for astonished). Scientists out of the University of Cam idge reviewed 72 different studies on more than 600,000 people from all over the world and found little evidence to support medical guidelines which recommended we limit our consumption of saturated fats in an effort to prevent heart disease.
The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, even found that a saturated fat called margaric acid actually reduced the risk of heart disease. They did find “weak associations” between palm oils and animal fats and an increased risk of heart disease, but not enough to support the current dietary recommendations. Expect much more on this subject as research findings are revealed. And expect to hear lots more about the new public health enemy: Sugar.
