When you have problems with your teeth or gums, such as loose teeth, sore or bleeding gums, or receding gums, your quality of life is greatly diminished. Seeing a periodontist can improve your oral health and help you achieve a healthy, beautiful smile. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum diseases, the repair of cosmetic problems related to the gums, and the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are specially trained and complete a three-year residency after dental school.
Chesapeake Periodonticsspecializes in improving the function and appearance of patients’ teeth and gums. The practice consists of two periodontists, Richard R. Gartner, Jr., D.D.S., M.S., and John E. Duckworth, D.M.D., M.Med.Sc., who have extensive experience in repairing receding gums, saving diseased teeth and gums, and placing dental implants. They work with their patients to alleviate anxiety and make them as comfortable as possible.
Dr. Gartner received his dental degree and specialty training in periodontology at the University of Ne aska College of Dentistry, following a postdoctoral fellowship in periodontics in the U.S. Navy and a periodontal residency at the VA Hospital in Ne aska. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. A Diplomate is a periodontist who has completed significant achievements beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty. Dr. Gartner is also a past president of the Anne Arundel County Dental Society and a past president of the Maryland Association of Periodontists. “Many of my family members were in health care, so I learned at a young age the satisfaction that comes from helping people achieve optimum health,” says Dr. Gartner. “I enjoy the interaction with my patients who learn the benefits of good dentistry in improving health and self-image through periodontics and implantology.”
Dr. Duckworth received his training in periodontology at Harvard University on a research fellowship, which was awarded by the National Institutes of Health. He received the Orban Prize for Periodontal Research, an honor awarded to the graduating periodontal resident who has contributed the best research in the world that year. After graduation, Dr. Duckworth served on the faculty of periodontology at the Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and a past president of the Ohio Academy of Periodontists.
“The interface between the teeth and the body is a critical part of overall health,” says Dr. Duckworth. “I became a periodontist because I wanted to help improve my patients’ overall health by improving their oral health. Helping a patient who has a painful, sore, unattractive mouth achieve a fully functional, healthy, attractive smile is the most rewarding part of being a periodontist.”
Chesapeake Periodontics is pleased to welcome you as a patient. The practice offers a “patient-centered” approach and works with your family dentist and other specialists to provide an individualized treatment plan that will not only improve your oral health but your overall health as well.

Q. Does a dental implant really replace a tooth?
A. A dental implant is a replacement for the root of your tooth. When properly placed and restored, it fully replaces the function of the missing tooth. A dental implant is more versatile than a tooth root because of the range of attachments that can be placed on it, and it can never decay. A periodontist is specially trained to place the implant properly and make the tissue around it look natural to match the aesthetics of the surrounding teeth, so you can have a great smile.
