Establishing an Enduring Legacy of Success
When Hillman, Brown & Darrow (HBD) commemorated its 45th anniversary last year, the momentous event represented yet another milestone in the law firm’s history. To honor this noteworthy occasion, HBD hosted a special anniversary party, which was attended by more than 500 clients, family, and friends. This impressive turnout not only demonstrated the community’s recognition of HBD’s long-standing service to the community but also further solidified its legacy as a trusted leader in the legal profession.
One of the oldest and most respected law firms in Annapolis, HBD has continued to grow and evolve throughout the years. Conveniently located in the heart of downtown—just steps from the courthouse—the firm has occupied the same iconic building since 1983. And with each passing year, the highly esteemed firm continues to thrive.
Founded in 1929 by Noah A. Hillman, the rich history of HBD dates back to 1976 when Samuel J. Brown began his practice with Noah and his son, Richard Hillman. Although Brown joined the practice in 1976, it was not until October 1, 1979—when Hillman & Brown merged with the practice of Michael P. Darrow—that HBD, as it is known today, was officially born. And 46 years later the firm is still going strong.
A pillar of the community, HBD’s roots are deep, and its involvement is far-reaching. A full-service law firm, HBD has stood the test of time and prides itself on its longevity, its stability, and its passion for the practice of law. From seasoned partners to associates just embarking on their careers, the firm is comprised of attorneys from all walks of life who practice in various areas and excel at providing high-quality legal services to meet their clients’ individual needs.
Indeed, HBD recently promoted an associate to partner and recruited a new associate—a testament to the firm’s dedication to rewarding exemplary job performance, hiring top-notch team members, and focusing on its continued growth.
Lauren A. Torggler was promoted to partner on January 1, 2025. She began working for HBD 17 years ago as a file clerk after receiving her Bachelor of Science in Communications from the University of Miami. Lauren left the firm to attend law school and returned in 2012—first as an intern and then as an attorney—after graduating from The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law. She is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and was admitted to the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.
Connor M. Noel, HBD’s newest associate, joined the firm in September 2024. He attended Christopher Newport University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology, and graduated from The George Washington University Law School in 2023 with a concentration in intellectual property. After graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Judge Cathleen M. Vitale in the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County before joining HBD. Connor plans to focus his practice on corporate, construction, business law, and intellectual property, but he is prepared to address clients’ needs in the general practice of law.
Jonathan Pasterick becomes President of the Anne Arundel Bar Association on June 9, 2025.
The attorneys at HBD have consistently received recognition for their achievements and earned numerous awards—a testament to their legal prowess and their dedication to their clients. They have also been listed as Leading Lawyers in What’s Up? since the inception of the survey. This year, Sarah E. Brown, Lauren A. Torggler, Katie L. D’Entremont, and Connor M. Noel were recognized as Up & Coming Lawyers in What’s Up?
