As spring settles in and our outdoor spaces begin to call us, we take a look at several showcase home projects—each a reflection of careful design, ingenuity, and well-chosen materials. What you’ll see on the following pages is a mixed presentation of contemporary decking, fencing, and hardscapes—exterior eye candy, and each a locally-completed project, proving that good things come in local spaces.
SHOWCASE 1
This is a renovation and expansion of an existing pool deck to maximize usable space, while conforming to buffer management regulations. It has been landscaped with a diverse mix of native trees, shrubs, and perennials to promote wildlife use and diversity.
A rain garden has been incorporated with the landscape to increase water infiltration and improve water quality. The materials used for the hardscaping include Nicolok Stone Ridge XL pavers and river rock.

SHOWCASE 2
The front of this St. Michaels property was given a sense of scale with larger plantings and a cottage-style fence to create a receiving courtyard. The driveway was re-routed to prioritize circulation for owners and guests, and was treated with a tan chipped gravel and cobblestone border to keep with the casual, elegant theme of the property.

SHOWCASE 3
The goal of this design was to create an outdoor space that was both open and inviting, while maintaining a coastal feel. This customer had existing decking and patios that that we tore down and rebuilt in order to accomplish this vision.
The decking features: multiple levels incorporated into a design to maximize space for both relaxation and/or entertaining; natural wood Ipe Brazilian hardwood decking used with a hidden fastener system (none of the screws were visible); a stainless steel cable rail with Ipe cap boards, used to maximize the waterfront view and give a nautical feel to the space; and Ipe trim used on the underside of the deck for a cleaner look and to provide additional storage.

SHOWCASE 4
Metal roofs are trending up, especially when using it on an accent piece of an exterior architecture project like an attached screened in porch or outdoor pavilion. This recently completed project includes a stunning copper roof for an outdoor pavilion on a private estate in the Annapolis area. Once the copper weathers, it blends in beautifully with the natural landscape and is very low maintenance, lasting a long time. Another trend is going with a metal roof that looks like aged copper, in a onze color. It looks great as an accent color and additional texture to a ick home.

SHOWCASE 5
This is a multi-level 780-square-foot Trex Deck. The flooring is a Trex Select board, Madeira color, featuring a hidden fastening system. Using hidden fasteners is a great way to construct a nice clean surface with no exposed screws. This homeowner chose Trex because it offers a durable, splinter-free finish that’s comfortable underfoot. Trex Select composite boards stand up to both weather and weekend mishaps, thanks to its high-performance shell. It also resists stains and mold better than traditional composites. Trex boards have a 25-Year Limited Residential Fade & Stain Warranty. This deck also features Kleer white textured Fascia board wrap and a complementary Washington White Vinyl Railing as a simple solution for a clean finish.
