There are few things that make me as giddy as interior design style reports. The freshness, the insight, the eye candy. It’s enough to make a girl start mentally redecorating every room in her house (if I do it mentally, my husband won’t catch on!). With so much information available, though, it’s hard to know which trends are fleeting and which are here to stay. So we’ve turned to the experts at High Point Market—the design destination for forecasts on everything from colors and patterns to textures and trends—using their style report as a guide for what’s hot in 2014. We present the inspiration; it’s up to you to make it your own!
Organic Glamour
It may sound like an oxymoron, but the contrast in this combination couldn’t be more harmonious. Think woods mixed with metals, stone-top tables, shell-trimmed chandeliers—anything that fuses the natural with the elegant to create a look that’s soft yet chic.
Jadeite and Amethyst
Purple certainly is trending this year, with Pantone naming Radiant Orchid its Color of the Year. While there’s plenty to be said for the vi ancy and pop of Pantone’s favorite shade of purple, the softer shade of amethyst—especially when mixed with the soothing greenish-blue tone of jadeite—is showing up on everything from upholstery to linens to accent furniture.
Everyday Luxury
Who says you can’t have form and function? This year, we’ll continue to see an emphasis on decor that is not only posh but practical—hide-on-hair accent chairs that are as luxurious to the eye as they are the touch, sleek chandeliers that set an elegant yet relaxed mood, and oversized coffee tables that hold decorative accents just as easily as coffee mugs.
A Bevy of Blues
From neutrals like Benjamin Moore’s Breath of Fresh Air (its Color of the Year) to bolder shades like navy and cobalt, blues will be everywhere this year—a trend that certainly isn’t new to this region, where blues have long been a popular choice, reflecting the colors of our scenic waters.
Masculine Décor
We can thank an increased male influence in the home for one of the biggest trends in interior design right now—masculine décor—and no, we’re not talking about sports posters, billiards tables, and deer antlers. By today’s standards, masculine décor is taking the form of sober furniture details, more muted tones, and a return to functionality—all of which add up to a seemingly effortless design that is sure to please both sexes.
