Garden Club and City of Annapolis Encourage May Day Basket Floral Tradition on May Day
Annapolis, MD - Continuing an annual tradition in Annapolis, the 70th Annual May Day Basket Competition will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2025. The annual rite of Spring is sponsored by the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne and supported by the City of Annapolis.
Annapolis residents and businesses are encouraged to adorn their doors and storefronts with fresh flower arrangements.
Labeled displays in the Historic District and parts of Murray Hill will be be judged by the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne. Judging begins at 10 a.m. Adult blue-ribbon winners will receive an invitation to the May Day Tea on May 6, hosted by the Garden Club.
“Every May 1st, when the May baskets adorn doors in Annapolis, it feels like our City is smiling again,” said Mayor Gavin Buckley. “It’s our community’s way of saying goodbye to winter and welcoming the beauty and energy of spring.”
Residents should display fresh flowers in a traditional basket by 10 a.m., labeled with their name and address. Businesses may create floral displays relevant to their trade, also labeled accordingly. Children are encouraged to participate by designing their own baskets (and will receive a participation ribbon).
