Years Teaching Overall: 10
Years Teaching at St. Vincent Pallotti: 5
Currently teaching: 10th grade General Biology; 11th grade General Chemistry; 12th grade AP Environmental Science
Proudest teaching moment: “My proudest teaching moments are when I catch my students demonstrating compassion toward one another when they do not realize someone is watching them. It never ceases to amaze me how willing my students are to step up and help out a fellow classmate who may be struggling with an assignment or other factors beyond the walls of our classroom. I see students take time to help each other succeed, rather than continuously compete against each other. In those moments I am incredibly proud of my students for putting others before themselves. This is a lesson that will serve them well in all endeavors.”
Teaching Philosophy: “Every student can be successful provided they are given the correct set of tools. I design my instruction to incorporate personal reflections that allow the students to self-identify what does and does not work for their unique learning needs. The consistent checking in through reflection ensures each student provides a narrative feedback in addition to feedback received from assignments. Together we can hone in on the tools that will lead to individual success in the classroom.”
Toughest challenge facing educators: “In my opinion, the toughest challenge educators have is to find ways to make the content relevant and interesting to our students when so much is available at the click of a button. It feels like we are in competition for their attention as they are pulled in multiple directions. To overcome this, I look for ways to encourage my students to take pride in their work and efforts in the classroom. I find that when my students take ownership over their learning, they are more engaged and willing to push beyond the scope of the assignment.”
