Annapolis in Bloom's "Blooming Heroes"
A hundred or so colorful, hanging flower baskets (and about 30 large, blooming containers) have been distributed from Main Street to Maryland Avenue, across West Street and over the Eastport idge as part of the annual “Annapolis in Bloom” program.
MainStreets Annapolis Partnership works closely with the City of Annapolis, Homestead Gardens, Annapolis Green, and more than a dozen major donors, aptly named the “Blooming Heroes,” to beautify the Annapolis business districts.
On Tuesday, MAP recognized this year's “Blooming Heroes” – What's Up? Media, Annapolis & Anne Arundel Conference & Visitors Bureau, WRNR 103.1 FM, Zachary's Jewelers, Severn Savings Bank, Annapolis Business Association, Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis, and Rams Head – for their $1,000-plus contribution to the program.
“We launched a crowd-sourcing strategy during a recent Green Drinks event hosted at Homestead Gardens by Annapolis Green,” says MAP Executive Director Lisa Craig. “Since then we've secured over $13,000 in gifts ranging from $15 to $1000 from residents, business owners, and nonprofits who appreciate the beautiful blooming flower baskets and pots that announce Spring has come to our historic seaport.”
City government provides only half the funding needed for the program that Homestead Gardens provides at-cost, as a contribution to the community, says Craig. Expenses involve growing the plants, putting them in containers, and most importantly, continual weeding, fertilizing and watering from May to October.
Still $7,000 short of its $40,000 goal, “Annapolis in Bloom” invites residents and businesses to contribute to its fundraising drive by clicking here.
