(Annapolis, MD) – Huzzah! The Annapolis Towne Crier takes a break from making proclamations to accept a well deserved award of his own. Four Rivers: The Heritage Area of Annapolis, London Town & South County awarded Frederick Taylor of Annapolis Tours℠ by Watermark® with the “Interpreter of the Year Award” at the 10th Annual Heritage Awards on November 7, 2013. The award is in recognition of Taylor’s portrayal of Francis Scott Key for the War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration in Maryland. In addition to Taylor’s role of Francis Scott Key, he has been leading walking tours of Annapolis for 16 years. The Heritage Awards recognize individuals, organizations, partnerships, programs and products that contribute significantly to the community by interpreting, promoting, preserving, researching and/or supporting our historical legacy.br
Director of Land Operations for Watermark Heather Skipper says, “I’m extremely proud of the hard work and dedication that Squire Frederick puts into each and every journey that he provides to the guests and clients of Watermark. He spent years researching and perfecting his role of Francis Scott Key and it shows. Frederick immerses people in the history, culture and fun of the Chesapeake region and has a great time doing it!” Taylor, also known as Squire Fred or “Frankie” when he’s portraying Francis Scott Key has been guiding with Annapolis Tours, which merged with Watermark in 2004, since 1997.
Taylor is a graduate of University of Maryland and a retired career NSA employee. A professional actor, Taylor can also sometimes be found performing at Annapolis’ Colonial Players Theater. At Watermark, Fred is often requested by group leaders to lead their tours and he receives many positive reviews online and in print. A recent reviewer said, “My wife and I took Squire Frederick’s tour Saturday morning. He was superb in every dimension – knowledge, fun-loving, humorous, perfect in character, respect for history, and respect for the sacred – in every way the best! Congratulations to you and him for a great experience.”
In his role as the Official Towne Crier of Annapolis, Taylor is requested to present proclamations at City and County events far and wide. He has introduced wedding parties, led tours on land, on the water and by motorcoach.
