The Maritime Republic of Eastport
Annapolis, MD - The Maritime Republic of Eastport announced the cancellation of the Annual Annapolis vs. Eastport Tug of War for this year due to COVID-19 in the following message:
"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the 2021 Tug has been cancelled. In light of the uptick in COVID cases in Maryland and in Anne Arundel County the MRE Board and Tug Committee met last night to discuss safety concerns. We agreed unanimously that we could not provide a safe environment for all involved with this event and for our community.
The tug has been a tradition for the residents of Eastport since 1997 when the Annapolis used the excuse of a "public works project" to close the Spa Creek bridge. This unprovoked act of aggression on the part of the City had the effect of cutting off Eastport residents and businesses from the rest of Annapolis. The somewhat fractious citizens of Eastport, feeling the sting of rejection by The City and, perhaps, somewhat emboldened by the generous pouring habits of a local bartender, decided to declare war against The City of Annapolis and secede. Thus, to the rallying cries of " Up The Republic," the micro-nation known as The Maritime Republic of Eastport was born.
But the MRE WILL rise again! Once we can meet safely, we shall continue the traditions like the Tug, the 0.05K Bridge and other events that help make Eastport the best darn place in the world to live! "
