Whether it’s just simply by having fun or facing challenges, sports easily translates into everyday life for Ashleigh Kerrigan. “I like to think of my life like a never ending game,” Kerrigan says. “As cheesy as that may sound, it is very true. Every time I face an obstacle, I have to think of a way to pull through.”
Her most recent hurdle was overcoming a torn ACL that she suffered last Thanksgiving.
“This was something so devastating for me because I was unable to finish a very important tournament,” she says. “However, I knew that if I wanted to get better by the time the [new] season rolled around, I would have to work extremely hard after surgery to get my strength back.”
After six months of grueling rehab, she is now healthy and ready to go. Kerrigan is focused on making a big impact on the field during her senior year.
During her high school career, she has earned the Minds in Motion Scholar Athlete award her first three years for every spot she has played, the 2012 field hockey Unsung Hero Award, and was selected to attend the Disney Showcase and the Festival Showcase for her travel team, Shore Field Hockey. She is also a five-time winner of the High Point trophy for Miles River Yacht Club Swim Team.
In school, Kerrigan is a member of the student government committee, National Honor Society, yearbook committee, prom committee, unified sports, and has been a class officer. She is planning on joining the Students Helping Other People (SHOP) club this year.
Her hobbies outside of school include regular visits to the gym and spending time listening to music. In the offseason, she can be seen spending her time playing on travel teams, which she enjoys because she can gain multiple perspectives from different coaches.
She is considering attending University of Maryland, Virginia Tech, High Point University, University of Richmond, Rochester Institute of Technology, William & Mary, Elon, and George Washington.
Given her interest in the ins and outs of the legal system, Kerrigan is leaning toward majoring in political science, criminal justice, or pre-law with the aspirations of attending law school.
