brIndian Creek School junior Ashley Leverrett seems to be the closest thing to the perfect student athlete.
brLeverrett balances athletics and academics in a way that few elite athletes do.
brLeverrett shines in both field hockey and lacrosse, carries a 4.14 grade point average, has served as class president, is a member of the Spanish National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society, and loves to work with young kids at camps.
br“I have never really met a kid like her,” Indian Creek field hockey coach Emily Bartz says. “She takes every [advanced placement] class at our school and gets all A’s. She volunteered at our camp for underprivileged kids. She’s on the SGA. She went to the Junior Olympics for field hockey. She’s doing things like that all year round. I don’t know how she does it all.”
brLeverrett says making certain sacrifices frees up time for her to achieve so much success on-and-off the field.
br“I don’t have spare time,” she explains. “I know what I have to do to be successful. My friends go to see a movie on Saturday night. I have to stay in and study. I don’t want to do something I love to sacrifice my ultimate success in the long run.”
brAll the hard work could pay off soon.
brLeverrett, who wants to pursue a career in the medical field, has been recruited by Ivy League and Atlantic Coast Conference schools for field hockey.
br“I would love to go to an Ivy League school,” Leverrett says. “When I am looking at colleges, I have to like the coach and the team. But my focus is on academics.”
brIn the meantime, Leverrett will continue to garner the most attention for her athletic accomplishments.
brShe helped the Indian Creek girls’ lacrosse team to Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland C Conference championships the past two seasons, playing as a starter both years.
brBut Leverrett is more known for her play in field hockey, a sport she competes in year-round.
brLeverrett was a member of the Odenton-based Spark club team that placed ninth in the nation in the USA Field Hockey National Club Championships in Iowa last year.
brAt Indian Creek, she has started the past three seasons and has led the team in goals and assists in 2013 and 2014.
brBesides her athletic talent, Bartz admires Leverrett’s toughness.
br“She had turf toe,” the coach says of last fall. “Some girls give up if something goes on for a week, but she didn’t sit out a game. And I didn’t notice a decrease in her performance.”
