For Baylee DiPietro, being a good student-athlete means to “work your hardest at everything you do and balance life obligations to succeed.”
Her philosophy of hard work was never more apparent than this summer when she began her first job but still made time to attend soccer camp in Pennsylvania and join a gym in order to get her offseason workouts in. That extra effort could help her meet her lofty expectations for this upcoming season. She aims to beat the school record for most goals scored in a season and win a Bayside Conference championship.
Her love for sports and competition began at a very early age.
“Queen Anne’s County has a great youth sports program,” she says. “I’ve been playing soccer and basketball since I pretty much started walking.”
One period of her sports career she reflects on fondly was playing on an all-boys U10 team. A few years later, her U14 team won the Baltimore Beltway Soccer League title in 2011.
DiPietro, who earned her way onto Kent Island’s varsity soccer team as a freshman, says the best moment of her high school career was scoring goals against the Buccaneers’ biggest rival Queen Anne’s in soccer last season.
Sports are not only an outlet for DiPietro, they’re also an avenue to build lasting bonds with new people.
“The friends and relationships you develop in sports programs are with you forever and help develop who you are as a person,” DiPietro says.
When she graduates from Kent Island and heads to college, she is looking to become a science major.
“Science majors run in our family and personally I am very interested in genetics,” she said. “I believe more can be done with genetics to solve many family, community, and world issues.”
In the past, DiPietro has enjoyed volunteering with former coach Lee Marks to support his work of promoting sports for people with disabilities. Off the field (and court), she enjoys spending time at the beach with her friends and enjoying a good laugh.
