Key School, Soccer, Lacrosse
It’s no secret that Matt Jarriel strives to win. That comes through his ability to em ace tough competition.
What he enjoys most about playing sports is “the (drive) for a championship. It’s tough coming from a small school but every year we’ve been competitive at just about every sport I’ve played. I love getting with a new team every year, inging in the freshman, inging up the people from JV.”
That desire was never more apparent than when he co-captained his soccer team to a 15-1-1 record and its first ever MIAA Championship last season. He also earned All-MIAA honors in lacrosse last season, helping the Obezags make the playoffs and come just minutes short of being in the MIAA/IAAM Championship game.
Part of his motivation comes from former Obezag athlete Josh Gurka, who he has a lot of respect for.
“I look up to him a lot because he balanced sports and academics about as well as you can,” Jarriel says.
Matt also looks up to Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.
When he’s not too busy winning championships or being named to all-star teams, Matt is very active. He has taken part in chorus and the math team. It’s no surprise that he likes numbers, considering he puts up big ones throughout the year.
Outside of school he enjoys hitting the slopes and skiing.
“It’s second nature to me,” he says. “My dad and sister are both ski patrollers. [I’ve been doing it] since I was two or three. I was in skis before I could walk.”
An accomplishment Jarriel is proud of is that he has been a member of Key’s varsity squads for both lacrosse and soccer since freshman year.
Jarriel is uncertain where he will attend college and what he will major in but he hopes to play lacrosse and possibly club soccer.
