ANNAPOLIS, MD - Mayor Gavin Buckley and the Annapolis City Council have allocated $500,000 in the City of Annapolis' 2025 budget to support essential rehabilitation efforts for the Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis (HACA), the public housing agency that manages public housing in the City of Annapolis. The funding is intended to assist HACA in their continuing mission to properly maintain affordable housing in Annapolis. The allocation was added to the Fiscal Year 2025 budget through amendment by Ward Six Alderman DaJuan Gay.
“Every family in Annapolis deserves access to safe and reliable housing,” said Mayor Buckley. “This funding underscores our City Council’s ongoing support for the residents that HACA serves.”
HACA’s public housing units are owned in partnership with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and managed by HACA. Public housing is available to low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
The $500,000 allocation will address key needs arising from the natural aging of HACA’s properties, many of which were built decades ago and require essential maintenance to meet current standards. In addition, the operational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic increased costs across the board, from maintenance to resident services. The funding will help HACA tackle these necessary upgrades while continuing to meet the administrative requirements of federal and City inspections, which are a routine part of ensuring quality and safety in public housing.
Since its founding in 1937, the Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis has been integral to the City's efforts to provide affordable housing solutions to low-income families. This funding highlights the collaborative effort between the City and HACA to improve living conditions for low-income families in Annapolis. By working together, both the City and HACA demonstrate a shared commitment to ensuring safe, affordable housing for those who need it most.
“We thank the Mayor and City Council for understanding the need to support housing for its residents that are in need of a safe and healthy home,” said Melissa Maddox Evans, executive director of HACA. “This funding will assist us greatly in performing much-needed repairs to our homes for our families.”
