Long Stretches of US 50, US 113 to be Completed Prior to Peak Summer Travel
(March 25, 2016) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is resurfacing two major highways on the lower eastern shore. Work is underway on westbound US 50 (Ocean Gateway) between White Richardson Road and Walston Switch Road just east of Salisbury in Wicomico County. Crews are milling, resurfacing and restriping this six-mile section, working 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday to complete the project by mid-April. Up to 28,000 vehicles travel this stretch of US 50 each day on average, with significantly higher volumes during the summer beach season.
Once the US 50 work is complete, SHA will move to US 113 (Worcester Highway) in Worcester County, where 5.3 miles will be resurfaced in both directions between MD 90 (Ocean City Expressway) and the Delaware state line. More than 14,000 vehicles travel this stretch of US 113 each day.
SHA awarded contracts to Allan Myers of Fallston for both projects. The US 50 contract is valued at $1.9 million; the US 113 work is valued at $3.8 million (estimated) and is being performed under a $10.3 million, multi-location area wide contract.
SHA is also paving 4.7 miles of MD 528 (Coastal Highway) from MD 90 to the Delaware line in Ocean City. This work began in mid-March and will be completed by Memorial Day.
SHA scheduled these locations early in the paving season to minimize public impacts - all three major resurfacing projects are time-sensitive due to increased summer traffic volumes. Crews may work extended hours and weekends as permitted to complete the work. Motorists are reminded that resurfacing projects can result in loose material – reduce speed and increase following distance through these work zones to improve safety and minimize the possibility of vehicle damage.
