Throughout the vetting process, as our editors sifted through hundreds of entries (many of you submitted multiple photographs) several themes emerged. Some of you captured fiery red sunsets, others bright orange sunrises, and still others exposed deep purples, blues, and grays that sneak into the horizon. Mirror reflections (sky on water) were also in the mix. We found out what you like to photograph the most (the Bay Bridge) and seemingly all major tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay were represented. Boats also played a huge role in many photographs, as did marshland and trees. Wildlife even snuck into a few.
rIt was difficult to narrow our selections to those that grace these pages, but the following photographs are very impressive to our eyes, and hopefully will be to yours. Congratulations, again, to all who participated.
rr1st Place
Photographer: Jean Hobbs
“Taken near sunset from a cruise ship on the way to New England and Canada. It was a great opportunity to take shots of the Bay Bridge from a perspective that you wouldn’t have otherwise.” Camera: Nikon D40.
2nd Place
Photographer: Scott Hartman
“Taken in October 2011 during the sail boat show on Spa Creek just after sunrise, during an early morning ride on my Boston Whaler.” Camera: Nikon D300s, f/9, and 1/250th of a second.
3rd Place
Photographer: Wilson Wyatt
“Sunrise taken at 7:49 a.m. in November 2011, from the shore through a low fog resting
on Leadenham Creek (off Broad Creek and the Choptank River), in Bozman, MD (Talbot County). The fog masks the horizon line between sky and sea, light and dark, during a rising tide.” Camera: Nikon D300, Nikkor DX18–200mm lens, at 43mm focal length, ISO 200, 1/125 of a second, at f/13, bracketed (-0.3 EV).
