St. Michaels, MD - The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is excited to share its newest special exhibition, Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad, in the Changing Exhibitions Gallery.
CBMM members got an exclusive first look during an opening event that took place on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 5:30pm before the exhibition opened to all guests the next day.
Based upon a scholarly book of the same name, Sailing to Freedom explores the lesser-known maritime aspects of the Underground Railroad while highlighting stories of enslaved African Americans’ journeys to freedom along Atlantic Coast water routes, including the Chesapeake Bay. The exhibition’s storytelling is supplemented by artifacts curated from CBMM’s collection, including models, artwork, and shipbuilding tools.
Make plans to join us soon to visit Sailing to Freedom to learn more about an important-yet-often overlooked piece of local history. Stay tuned for more details on programming highlighting the exhibition, including a Dec. 6 Speaker Event with Dr. Timothy Walker, editor of the Sailing to Freedom book and co-curator of the exhibition.
