Students Reagan Scott, Peter Binnie, and James Knott participate in Wreath Laying Day with a group of 7 peers at a local cemetery to honor the sacrifice of our community’s veterans.
Crownsville, MD. – Seniors Reagan, Peter, and James arrived at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. There they rallied a small group of supporting students to lay wreaths, listen to veterans tell their stories, and help other volunteers find loved ones’ graves from 8 AM to 2 PM. Since January of 2025, Peter and Reagan have researched and prepared for this Saturday morning. Being so close to Washington D.C. and the Naval Academy, the Severna Park community is full of both active-duty and veteran families. Reagan, Peter, and James all have family members that served in World War II, the Vietnam War, or are currently stationed overseas. Because of the direct impact veterans have had on these students, they decided to partner with Wreaths Across America for their senior capstone project.

This project came to fruition through Severna Park High School’s Leadership Institute. The program, which starts sophomore year and ends senior year, is designed to help students learn to be leaders in their community. Ending with a Senior Capstone project, students are given the ability to partner with an organization of their choosing and fundraise for their cause. With their project, Reagan, Peter, and James have raised over $400 towards Wreaths Across America, and sponsored over 10 wreaths through community outreach. In total, they were able to supply wreaths for over 30 graves on wreath laying day, some even being for the relatives of family and friends. The thing that surprised all three leaders the most is the outreach and relatability that was produced. Getting to know the stories of so many families and the impact and importance of the project meant so much more than any donation. Reagan, Peter, and James hope to continue supporting Wreaths Across America for years to come.
