First Day Hikes include First Weekend Outdoor Opportunities, with Ranger-led Hikes and Self-Guided Hike Options for the Whole Family!
Annapolis, MD - Maryland State Parks will be offering First Weekend hike opportunities across the state from December 31, 2021- January 2, 2022. First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks that encourages all 50 states to offer outdoor hiking opportunities on the first day of the new year! Join us in Maryland on January 1st or throughout the first weekend of the new year for a hike at a state park near you.
For 2022, there are two types of hikes available:
- Ranger-led hikes: These hikes will be led by a Park Ranger, have specific start times and many require pre-registration. Please read the details provided below carefully.
- Self-guided hikes : These hikes will be available throughout the weekend, on well marked trails. Park staff and volunteers may be available to get you started but will not be joining you on the hike itself. Please read the details provided below carefully.
First Day Hike “I Hiked” Stickers will be available at select locations while supplies last!
Please note you are welcome to take a First Day Hike on any trail or at any State Park during this weekend event, if you would prefer!

Want to break a sweat this New Years? Tackle Evitts Homesite Trail's significant elevation and be rewarded with sweeping views upon arrival at the Mason Dixon Line.

Enjoy an easy winter walk suitable for all ages with beautiful views of the gorge. A ranger will lead this hike, with options for shorter paths or longer journeys, but all will be less than a mile.
Additional Details: Leashed pets welcome. Level natural surface trail, but does include a few steps at the trailhead.

Ranger Led: Community Heritage Hike at Dans Mountain State Park

A ranger will lead hikers along the 1 mile Dye School Trail, showcasing the natural and cultural history of Dans Mountain State Park. The route will steadily climb 200 feet to the Dye School foundation, and will then loop downhill for the second half of the hike.
Additional Details: This is a natural surface trail and is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Leashed pets are welcome. The hike will begin and conclude at the Hill Run Pavilion where guests can enjoy a warm outdoor fire and complimentary hot chocolate. A portable restroom is located about a half mile away on Water Station Run Rd.

Self Guided Hike: Choose Your Own Adventure Hike! Starts at East Beach - Osprey Pavilion

2022: A New Year with New Possibilities! Become a Park Planner on this self-guided, choose your own adventure hike where the path you take and the decisions you make help to create your dream park. Hikes available Saturday, January 1 and Sunday, January 2. Start in the East Beach Area at the Osprey Pavilion.

Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and season, and be prepared for trail conditions including but not limited to: mud, uneven surfaces, gentle to moderate slopes. Self Guided Hike: Hereford Area - Camp Wood (Bunker Hill Trail "loop")
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
Distance: 6 miles
Choose your own adventure and explore the Hereford Wildlands! Designated as such by the Maryland General Assembly, this 1200 acre parcel of land is protected for its outstanding value as a unique ecological area, hosting abundant wildlife and even endemic plant species. Participants can park in the large asphalt parking lot at the end of Bunker Hill Rd and start on the Bunker Hill Trail, connecting to the Gunpowder South Trail (traversing through a protected Hemlock preservation), turning onto the Mingo Forks Trail, crossing over Bunker Hill Rd, and back onto the Bunker Hill Trail which leads back to the parking area. Downloading a trail map in advance is highly recommended (https://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Documents/GFSP_HerefordMap.pdf), however limited copies will be available to take at the First Day Hike sign. Terrain can be very rugged at times, making this a trail better suited for moderate to experienced hikers. This event is rain or shine.
Additional Details: This area of the park is open from sunrise to sunset. Pets on leashes are welcome. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes (preferably water-resistant). There are no bathroom facilities on site, so please plan accordingly. Self Guided Hike: Black Marsh Trail

This self-guided hike takes you through the scenic Black Marsh Wildlands where you may observe rare animals and plants that make this tidal wetland their home. Additional Details: Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch to enjoy at the picnic area overlooking the Chesapeake Bay after the hike. Dress for the weather and bring water. Water-resistant boots are highly recommended. Wildlife viewing opportunities are plentiful; bring binoculars if interested in birdwatching. The trail is not suited for strollers, but children are welcome. Park is open 8:00am to 4:50pm, $3.00 per vehicle entrance fee.

Join park staff for a guided bicycle ride along the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail! Participants will be led on a 5-mile out-and-back bicycle ride down the surfaced rail trail. Scenic river views and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities! Bicycles are not provided – please bring your own! Dress for the weather and bring water. Children under age 16 are welcome, however they are required to wear helmets.

Come start the New Year with a guided hike along the Red Trail beginning 9 a.m. Sat Jan 1! The hike is 3.6 miles round trip beside scenic wetlands and leads to the Chesapeake Bay where views of the Calvert Cliffs are possible. Complete the hike to earn a sticker for your accomplishment and enjoy refreshments provided by the Friends of Calvert Cliffs State Park!

This Hike will take you through the mixed hardwood forest and along the Patapsco river along a wide trail that is well suited for the whole family! The Patapsco Mobile Visitor Center will be on site to provide maps, have Discovery Packs available for loan, and offer other activities to help start your year off right!

Self Guided Hike: Turkey Point Lighthouse Trail

Distance: 1.5 miles (.8 mile one way)
Frolic through fields and forest all weekend to reach your destination at the historic Turkey Point Light Station overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. Keep on the lookout for snow geese and other winter wildlife as you hike the 1.5 miles round-trip gravel trail.
Additional Details: There is no day use fee for this area but parking is limited. The trail is suited for mountain bikes and pets on a leash but not stroller friendly. Registration is not required. The Turkey Point Lighthouse Area is open from sunrise to sunset.

This self- guided hike begins from the Gallaher Road Parking Lot (491 Gallaher Road, Elkton, MD 21921) and provides visitors with a glimpse of Fair Hill NRMA's varied terrain and habitats, while utilizing a mixture of trail types from double track gravel to natural surface single track paths. A route guide for the hike is available by the black gate across from the Gallaher Road Lot.

Self Guided Hike: Catoctin Furnace and African American Cemetery Trail

Length: 2.2 miles
Start the new year with a little hiking and a lot of knowledge! Starting at the lower parking area in the Manor Area of Cunningham Falls State Park, this one mile trail (approximately 2.2 miles round trip) trail takes you along Little Hunting Creek and over US 15 via a steep footbridge to the historic Catoctin Furnace Historic Site. There you will find the ruins of the Iron Master’s House and the furnace “Isabella”. Continue beyond the furnace site to an African American Cemetery that was the final resting place of some of the furnace workers. Interpretive panels along the trail tell you the story of the land and of the workers who lived and worked at the furnace over its 127 year history.
Additional Details: Parking is available at the Furnace site along Route 806 for those who cannot hike over the footbridge. Portable toilets are available in the Manor Area. Leashed pets are welcome. An easy trail for youngsters to start a New Year's tradition. Start at the Manor Area playground parking lot and pick up the trail to the right of the playground. Read the fall/winter themed book as you meander through the woods. The trail ends at the park's Aviary where you can view the park's 11 birds of prey outside of the gated area.

Join a park ranger and get your blood pumping on the first of the year. We'll head straight up the mountain on the switchbacks of Old Misery, the trail name won't disappoint! We'll keep going to join Cat Rock trail and pause for a break at the Cat Rock formation before turning around and retracing our steps back down the mountain.

Self Guided Hike: New Year’s Eve Sunset Hike on "High Knob Loop"

Allow the sun to set on your year at Gambrill State Park! Join us for a self-paced sunset hike in the High Knob Area on Friday, December 31, 2021. A Ranger will be stationed at the Nature Center from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. to hand out brochures, maps and stickers. Hikers are suggested to begin their hike between 4:15 and 4:30 p.m. in order to arrive at the Middletown Overlook in time for a true western region sunset.
Additional Details: Area is not accessible via stroller. Leashed pets are welcome! Please dress for the weather and bring water. There are no restroom facilities on site. We'll begin at Crampton's Gap and hike on the Appalachian Trail to Brownsville Pass, one of the lesser known locations that played a role in the 1862 Battle of South Mountain. Once we reach Brownsville Pass, you will have the option to hike back or continue on towards Weverton Cliff Overlook.
Additional Details: Leashed pets are welcome. The Appalachian Trail is not wheelchair or stroller friendly. Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring water. No Pre-registration Required.

Come to Sang Run State Park for a self-guided hike through the historic agricultural fields. This stroll is excellent for birdwatching and beautiful views of the Youghiogheny River Valley. The Bluebird trail is marked by blue circles, and starts just up the hill by the garden behind the Friends Store.
Additional Details: Prepare for possible snow covered trails with proper hiking shoes and warm clothing and binoculars. Bring something to drink since there is no potable water on-site. Leashed pets are welcome. No stroller/wheelchair access. Vault toilet available in the parking lot.

During this winter hike, a ranger will lead you on an invigorating 2.6 mile walk down the scenic Turnpike Trail to our Dynamite Shack Loop to start the year off with an imaginary bang! Expect to climb about 260 ft of elevation to kickstart your 2022 fitness goals. The route may be adjusted In the event of skiable, snow-covered trails.
Additional Details: This is a natural surface trail and is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Leashed pets are welcome. The hike will begin and conclude at the Lake House where guests can enjoy restroom facilities, a warm fire and complimentary hot chocolate for hikers. Snowshoes will be available to rent if conditions allow.

Join us for a mountainside hike along Beckman's Trail. You will learn about the bold black bear community we have in Garrett County. We will also be passing the historic Brant Coal Mine located just off the trail! Prepare for possible snow covered trails with proper footwear and layers. Should the mountain trails be too slick, we will stroll beside the beautiful lakeshore.
Additional Details: Leashed pets are welcome. No stroller/wheelchair access. There is no restroom access at the trailhead, but a portable restroom is available at the ranger station. The hike will have around 300 feet of elevation gain.

This self- guided, easy-to-moderate hike along the Big Gunpowder Trail adjacent to the Little Gunpowder Falls is available on both Saturday and Sunday. The trail is well marked and will interpret the history of the Village, including its role as a town hub for nearly 200 years.
Additional Details: Friendly, leashed dogs with hiking experience are welcome. Trail not suitable for strollers, but children are welcome. Dress for the weather and bring water. Water-resistant boots are highly recommended. No registration required.

Join us on New Years Day from 10 am to 12 pm for a 1 mile round trip First Day Hike of the River Ridge trail. This Hike will be assisted by the Patapsco Senior Rangers and will depart from Shelter 300. Hikers will hike down the recently constructed River Ridge Trail extension to the Patapsco River.
Additional Details: This Hike is open to visitors of all ages, but will traverse uneven terrain and moderate slopes. Sturdy closed toe shoes and appropriate clothing are required. Shine only. Pets on a leash are welcome. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and season, and be prepared for trail conditions including but not limited to: mud, uneven surfaces, moderate to steep slopes. Trail is not stroller friendly. Park Entrance fee is $2/vehicle, payable at the Honor Box.

Additional Details: Pets are welcome but need to be on a six foot leash (not a retractable leash). Bring some water for the hike and some snacks if needed! The Trail is passable with a Stroller.

Stop by the Day-Use boardwalk for a fireside chat with park staff, share stories, ask questions and make a connection. Hike is available January 1st and 2nd from 7am to sunset. This self-guided hike starts at the nature center and takes multiple trails to loop back to the nature center. The planned path gives opportunities to hike through the cypress swamp, see changes to the trail system and to have a chance to see what Pocomoke River State park has to offer.
Additional Details: In cooperation with Assateague State Park and Janes Island State we are offering a Lower Shore First Day Hike Challenge. Hikers who participate in all three first day hikes can have the opportunity of winning Park Swag prizes. To enter, hikers will take a photo with a recognizable or established spot along the trail route for each park and post the three photos online to either facebook or twitter.
