ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan joined local elected officials, parishioners, and residents of St. Michaels to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the founding of Christ Church - St. Michael’s Parish.
“The church is a place of fellowship, family, and faith. Equally as important, the church is devoted to service and outreach, and finding ways to feed the hungry, help the helpless, and provide comfort to the brokenhearted—a spirit of community that is needed now more than ever during these uncertain times,” said Governor Hogan. “The fact that Christ Church - St. Michael’s Parish has survived and flourished for 350 years is a testament to generation after generation of parishioners who have lived up to the calling of the church—creating a welcoming and inclusive place to worship and serve here in the heart of beautiful St. Michaels.”
Christ Church - St. Michael’s Parish was founded in 1672 as one of the Church of England’s original “water churches” along the Chesapeake Bay. Surviving artifacts of the parish’s extensive history include the baptismal font, which was a gift from Queen Anne in the early 18th century.
The current home of Christ Church - St. Michael’s Parish, which is located along S. Talbot Street in St. Michaels, was designed by architect Henry Martyn Congdon in the “high Victorian Gothic” style and completed in 1878.
