Highlights State Infrastructure Investment, Passage of Bipartisan Federal Infrastructure Bill
ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan welcomed President Joe Biden to Maryland’s Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore, which is the largest e-commerce port and one of the busiest ports in the United States. During the visit, the governor touted the Port as an example of world-class infrastructure at work and a beneficiary of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
“Our port is continuing to gain new business month after month from all across the globe, and now we are thrilled that the Port of Baltimore will be a beneficiary of the new bipartisan infrastructure bill, which will help us make even more critical investments in this port and in our roads, bridges, tunnels, airports, waterways, in broadband, and with cyber defense,” said Governor Hogan. “This landmark legislation will help us grow jobs, expand economic opportunity, and enhance security, and I was proud to support this bipartisan effort and to have helped push to get it across the finish line.”
Today’s event was held at the Port’s Dundalk Marine Terminal, where the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA) is reconstructing and strengthening its roll on/roll off berths to accommodate larger and heavier farm and construction machinery and other cargo. The Port of Baltimore handles more cars/light trucks and roll on/roll off cargo than any other U.S. port.
“We welcome President Biden to the Port of Baltimore to survey ongoing berth construction projects, the four new Neo-Panamax cranes, the recently completed dredging operations, and to discuss future projects that will benefit from the recently passed bipartisan infrastructure deal,” said MDOT MPA Executive Director William P. Doyle. “We will be breaking ground later this year on the Baltimore CSX Howard Street Tunnel Project, which includes federal funding, and which will widen a 126-year-old freight tunnel to allow for double stacked container trains to and from the Port of Baltimore.”
Governor Hogan played a leading role in passage of the bipartisan federal infrastructure bill. In 2019, as chairman of the National Governors Association, the governor launched a year-long national initiative focused on rebuilding America’s crumbling infrastructure. In April, Governor Hogan convened the Annapolis Infrastructure Summit, bringing together a bipartisan group of governors, senators, and members of the House Problem Solvers Caucus, to agree on the size and scope of the bill.
The Port of Baltimore is leading the response to the current supply chain crisis, cargo volumes are strong and continuing to increase, and construction on the transformative Howard Street Tunnel project is expected to begin later this year. Learn more about the Port’s growth and leadership here.
