Stephen Krohn has limited his practice over the past 36 years to family law, handling issues of separation, divorce, custody, prenuptial agreements and property settlements. Stephen also became one of the first attorneys to receive a Certificate in Mediation from Harvard Law School in 1994. Angela D. Magruder joined the firm in 2010. Over the past 10 years, Angela has focused her practice on family law matters. Family law issues present very unique challenges on the path to resolution. When an alternative solution is not attainable despite best efforts, Angela dedicates herself to preparing for litigation of family law disputes in the courtroom. Additionally, Angela is a trained mediator, striving to promote creative solutions to marital conflict. She serves as a court-appointed mediator for the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County, and volunteers her time as a facilitator on a regular basis. Angela is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, Anne Arundel County Bar Association and Prince George’s County Bar Association.
Andrea N. Padley graduated from the University of Georgia in 2001 and from the University of Maryland School of Law in 2004. She was admitted to the Maryland bar in 2004, and shortly thereafter became Managing Attorney of the YWCA of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Domestic Violence Legal Services program, where she provided representation to victims of abuse in their domestic violence and family law matters until joining Krohn & Krissoff, P.A. in 2010. Andrea is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and the Anne Arundel Bar Association. She also serves on the Judicial Nominations Committee of the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association and formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence. Q. How do you determine whether a case should be settled or tried in court?
A. This question is addressed nearly every day in the practice areas of criminal/traffic defense, personal injury matters, and domestic law. The answer is of the utmost importance and requires detailed analysis and evaluation. Every case is unique, with a particular set of goals, issues, and varying degrees of contested facts. The key is being able to effectively assess the relative strengths and weaknesses of each case, the risks and costs of litigation, and the likely range of possible outcomes if the case is tried. Among other things, the certainty involved with settlement offers, including plea offers in criminal cases, financial offers in personal injury matters, and proposed agreements in domestic cases must be weighed against the risks and potential benefits of a contested trial.

Q. Will the Court help me resolve custody/visitation issues?
A. Yes. If there are unresolved custody/visitation issues, the Court will require that both parents attend an education program (i) to familiarize them with the Court system and what to expect and (ii) to prepare the parties for mediation. The Court will then assign a certified mediator who will spend up to four hours with the parties assisting them in reaching a solution to their differences. Most cases involving custody/visitation issues are settled with help from the parties’ lawyers and the court-appointed mediator. If unresolved custody/visitation issues still remain, a strong advocate is highly recommended.
