Maryland Department of Health celebrates the Maryland Public Health Laboratory’s 125th anniversary
Maryland 2023 — The Maryland Department of Health hosted a celebration to honor the 125th anniversary of the Maryland Public Health Laboratory. The laboratory is one of the longest-running public health labs in the U.S. and the Department’s oldest continuously operating unit. Since 1898, the laboratory has grown from one employee with $2,500 in funding to 230 scientists and support staff across 13 specialty divisions. The state public health laboratory has a rich history of focusing on population health through diagnostic and reference testing and research to provide statewide, regional and national disease surveillance and emergency response support.
