One of my favorite things to see is my favorite characters on the page of a novel come to life on the big screen. Will they be the person I envisioned in my head or will they be completely different from who I expected? From The Fault in Our Stars to The Devil Wears Prada, we have seen so many book characters become movie characters. Lets see what is coming to the movies and streaming services in 2021.
Listed below are a few books that are becoming movies this year. Do you have any recommendations for me? Email mkotelchuck@whatsupmag.com with your most recent read and a quick review about it to be featured!
The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga: Not only did Aravind Adiga's first novel spend it's fair share of time on the New York Times Bestseller list AND win a Booker Prize in 2008, but it has recently become a movie on Netflix produced by and starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The film has recently been nominated for an Oscar for adapted screenplay. Follow this rags to richest story when a rich Indian family's driver uses his wit to escape from poverty and rise to the top as an entrepreneur. Click here to watch the trailer for the movie. Watch the movie now on Netflix.
The Dig by John Preston: Travel back to 1939 with John Preston's historical novel. While Britain is preparing for the war, the widowed farmer, Mrs. Pretty, has had her hunch proved correct that the strange mounds on her land hold a buried treasure. As the dig continues, the discovery is more than they can handle. This recreation of the Sutton Hoo dig is brilliantly dramatized and gathers together locals, outsiders, professionals, and amateurs. Watch the movie now on Netflix.
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah: To finish out the year, Kristin Hannah's most heartfelt book, and my personal, favorite book ever, will be turned into a movie staring Elle and Dakota Fanning. Coming out on December 23rd gives you plenty of time to put down everything you are doing to read this amazing story which follows two sisters living in France who are torn apart during World War II.
Bonus Books:
The Tale of Peter Rabbit: Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, based on the Beatrix Potter's children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit will be released on April 2nd.
101 Dalmatians: Dodie Smith's novel will be coming to life this year, but not focused on the dalmatians. The star of Cruella will be Cruella De Vil herself portrayed by Emma Stone coming out May 28th
