We have talked about how amazing our area is and how lucky we are to live here, but it is also important to remember how talented our neighbors are. We have many authors from our area that have published children's books. Just this month, Kirsten Durkee of Annapolis published a 38 page children's book for 1st and 2nd graders. Let's go!
The Breakfast Squad by Kirsten Durkee (Annapolis) - Do you ever wonder if your food has feelings?
Well, meet the Squad who lives behind the scenes at the Sunrise Diner: Eggleton, Hashy, Cakes, Frenchie, Baconator, and the sibling sausage duo, Link and Patty! Read along as they bring you an insider’s look at friendship, compromise, and fun. Get to know these lovable characters as they take a closer look at what really matters when it comes to understanding those around you.
On Grandpop's Lap by Cathy Helowicz: On Grandpop’s Lap is a story about a young boy named Zachary who visits his Grandparents. While Grandmom is making cookies, Zachary gets into mischief. Grandmom turns to Grandpop for help in keeping Zachary busy. Grandpop tries to occupy Zachary with games, videos and toys until Zachary finally tells his Grandpop that he really just wants to sit on his lap and hear his stories.
That Fernhill Summer by Colby Rodowsky (Baltimore) - Kiara Jones-Birkell knows a lot about the Birkell side of her family, and nothing about the Joneses. The one time she tried to ask about her mother’s relatives, her mom turned a spooky greenish-white color and refused to talk to anyone. So it comes as quite a shock when Kiara learns that the grandmother she never knew she had is expected to die at any moment. Suddenly Kiara finds herself on a train heading for Baltimore – and her mother’s secret past. There she meets Zenobia, the world’s most stubborn grandmother, who is as eruptive as Mount Vesuvius. Kiara can’t understand what Zenobia could possibly have against her – is it simply the fact that her skin is dark like mocha latte, while all her cousins are white? Or is there, as Kiara’s mother keeps hinting, much more to the story? Told from the point of view of a teenager with spot-on observations and hilarious insights, this is the story of three generations of stubborn – and charmingly funny – women.
Jordie's School Day Adventure by Jennifer LB Leese (Western Maryland) - It is Jordie's first day of pre-school. She's excited and ready to go. That is, until she gets to school and sees all the children. Now, she's ready to go home. Her mommy hands her a small picture of herself for Jordie to look at whenever she gets nervous. Jordie places it in her pocket for safe keeping. Slowly, Jordie starts to relax and within no time she's having lots of fun. She plays dolls and blocks during center time, she listens to her teacher read her a story from a big red book, and she sits beside her new friend, Sue during snack time.
By the time her mommy comes to get her, she can't wait to come back again.
