With a disappointing 3-10 season in the rearview mirror, the Navy Midshipmen were eager to get their 2019 campaign off to a hot start. They did just that by beating Holy Cross, 45-7, in the Saturday’s season opener at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.
Saturday marks Navy’s fifth straight home-opening victory.
Navy is looking to improve its passing game this season but continued its usual domination on the ground, piling up 428 yards and six rushing touchdowns. The 428 yards gained on the ground was a feat accomplished only once last season when the Mids beat Lehigh on September 15.
Nelson Smith led Navy with 96 rushing yards and three touchdowns, matching his career total entering Saturday. C.J. Williams added another 91 yards on the ground and one touchdown.
Quarterback Malcolm Perry went 6-for-9 passing for 103 yards and ran for 28 yards and one touchdown.
The Navy defense stymied the Crusaders throughout the game, allowing just 64 yards on the ground and 167 through the air. The defense sacked Holy Cross quarterback Connor Degenhardt three times.
Linebacker Diego Fagot led all Midshipmen with nine tackles.
Navy will take next week off before hosting American Athletic Conference rival East Carolina on Saturday, September 14 at 3:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
