Register for Fall Youth Programs at Adkins Arboretum
Registration is live for fall preschool and homeschool programs! In Acorn Academy Nature Preschool, children ages 3 to 5 will enjoy stories, songs, snacks, and lots of outdoor time while learning about snapping turtles, the Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly, spiders, and much more.
Homeschool programs include The Science of Fall and Trees of the Arboretum. In The Science of Fall, homeschoolers ages 6 to 8 will explore why leaves change color and learn about tree ID, bird and butterfly migration, and other topics related to autumn. They'll also engage in games, environmental crafts, and plenty of nature walks.
Trees of the Arboretum, for students ages 9 to 12, will delve into native tree identification through exploration of the Arboretum's woodland habitats. This "feet wet, hands dirty" science program will also uncover the dynamic relationships between native trees, animals, and people, both now and in the past. Opportunities to use scientific equipment will be part of the learning process.
All three programs run Thursdays from September 16 to November 4. Click here for times and to register.
Maryland Zoo Free of Single-Use Consumer Plastics
As three-time winners, The Maryland Zoo community is once again participating in the Plastic Free Ecochallenge this month. In the spirit of this global sustainability movement, we are excited to announce that The Zoo no longer sells drinks in plastic bottles! All bottled drinks, including water, are now sold in recyclable aluminum.
Other changes that have been made to remove single-use plastics from Zoo concessions are: Dippin’ Dots and ice cream cups are paper; All spoons are made from wood; Condiment portion cups are paper; All food containers are paper products. In the near future, the Zoo will use washable plates, bowls and utensils at concession stands; We now have three refillable water bottle stations within the Zoo and encourage guests to bring their own reusable water bottles when they visit.
