The Banneker-Douglass Museum in Annapolis is the only Maryland historic site to receive a 2020 African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Banneker-Douglass Museum is the only museum in the country operated by an African American state commission, the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture. Not only that, the MCAAHC, founded in the late 1960s, is also the first state ethnic commission in the nation and is still one of few such organizations found nationally. The grand from the African American Culture Heritage Action Fund will specifically support expanding the capacity of the Banneker-Douglass Museum by hiring of a development director to help achieve programmatic and philanthropic goals.
Maryland’s Reopening plans are Paused
Governor Hogan said in a news conference on Wednesday that Maryland will not move into the third phase of the Roadmap to Recovery plan “until it is safe, prudent and thoroughly backed by the data and medical science”. “We do find ourselves at a fork in the road, a critical turning point where we could either continue making progress and continue heading in the right direction or we could ignore the warnings and spike back up like much of the rest of the country. We’re making every effort to keep Maryland safely open for business” said Gov Hogan.
Baltimore Ravens Superfan Mo Gaba passes away
Last week, Mo Gaba passed away at 14 years old. Gaba was blind and lost his fourth battle with cancer. Gaba has always been a huge Ravens fan and he became the first person to announce an NFL draft pick using a draft card written in Braille in 2019. The card he read from is now displayed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton alongside the bronze bust of Ed Reed, Jonathon Ogden, and Ray Lewis. The Tuesday before he passed, it was also announced that he had been elected to the Orioles Hall of Fame as the second- ever recipient of the Wild Billy Hagy Award. Mo had a big impact on both these teams and the city of Baltimore.
