At this time eight schooners have confirmed their participation—from as far away as Connecticut and as close as Cambridge—including, Lady Maryland, Mystic Whaler, Martha White, Heron, Prom Queen, Celebration, Watershed and Jacob Jones. Several other vessels will also join in the festivities, including Elf, a clipper ship built in 1888, Isa Lei, a ketch, and Nathan of Dorchester, a skipjack. On Saturday and Sunday, day sail and dockside tours happen from 10 a.m.until 5 p.m., along with live entertainment, food, vendors, family-friendly activities and historic walking tours of Cambridge’s High Street. Admission is free; each ship sets admission prices for tours and sails.
The action takes place on the banks of the Choptank River at Long Wharf Park, near the intersection of High and Water Streets in Cambridge. There’s plenty of free parking, and the shops and restaurants of historic downtown Cambridge are a short walk away.
Entertainment includes several musical performers, including Slow Boat Captains for Truth and Justice, Janie Meneely & Calico Jack, and Schooner Time.
On Saturday evening, ticket holders are invited to join the captains and crew of the vessels for an Eastern Shore Dinner at Long Wharf. For additional information and to purchase tickets go to www.richardsonmuseum.org or call Gladys at 410.221.1871.
Cambridge, Maryland’s second deepest harbor (after Baltimore), is an ideal location for the Cambridge Schooner Rendezvous, which honors the past lifestyles and traditions of these vessels that not only worked the Bay and its tributaries but engaged in trade as far away as South America and the Caribbean.
“This is a unique opportunity to see these majestic ships up close,” said Jane Devlin, Chair of the 2011 Cambridge Schooner Rendezvous. “We welcome all to join us at the Rendezvous this year to celebrate and learn more about our maritime past, as well as our future possibilities as a waterfront town.”
