Boys’ Latin has been educating boys for more than 177 years, and in the fall of 2021, we welcomed the School’s first-ever boarders. We couldn’t possibly be more excited!
In January of 2020, Boys’ Latin purchased 28 acres of rolling countryside that adjoins our campus, as well as several buildings, from the Society of St. Joseph’s (The Josephites). The property nearly doubled the footprint of the School, creating limitless programmatic opportunities. In considering the new purchase, the first project would be to convert the existing St. Joseph Manor into a state-of-the-art boarding facility, allowing us to reinforce our commitment to provide boys with broader experiences and perspectives in an increasingly interconnected world.
On August 29, 2021, a group of young men joined our Laker community. The boys hail from six different states — Florida, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Maryland and North Carolina — bringing with them a variety of interests and passions ranging from athletics to art to nature to travel. “Our day students have welcomed boarders in ways we couldn’t have imagined,” said upper school head Brian Mitchell. “As a school built on relationships, it’s not surprising how quickly they have integrated into our community.” You see, at Boys’ Latin boarding isn’t about leaving your family behind. It is about building a bigger family.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Designed from the ground up, Boys’ Latin’s boarding program provides boys in grades 9-12 with an immersive seven-day boarding experience. Our program incorporates the latest innovations in residential life and all-boys education, allowing us to create a cutting-edge curriculum and experience for boys.
Our newly-renovated boarding facility includes twenty dormitory rooms which can house two boys. Measuring 350 sq. feet, larger than many college dorm rooms, each includes its own full private bathroom. The dorm is equipped with a full-size kitchen, central dining area and expansive common area for study and student life.
THE BOARDING EXPERIENCE
Since arriving at BL almost a month ago, our new boarding students lost no time getting to know campus, each other and our community. Our program is designed for boys to develop tight bonds with not only the boarding community, but with our entire community. Each of our boarding students is paired with a day student and his family to enjoy a home-cooked meal, a movie night, or maybe even a Ravens game. You can often find day students visiting the dorm to collaborate on a history project or play a little ping pong. For Halloween our boarders will help lower school students decorate pumpkins and they might even share a ghost story or two around a bonfire.
Weekends are a busy time for boarders; campus is often bustling with excitement. There are numerous athletic competitions to attend and exciting events, such as Lake Fest and Homecoming. Over the past month, the boys have hiked in the Appalachian Mountains, hit a few balls on the driving range, attended an Orioles game, spent an afternoon team building on a high ropes course and enjoyed a real Baltimore crab feast.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
At Boys’ Latin, students get the best of both worlds — an expansive campus with 72 rolling acres of countryside and the culture-rich city of Baltimore right around the corner. Downtown Baltimore, located only 15 minutes from campus, is home to two professional sports teams, numerous museums and an expansive culinary and cultural scene.
Located only 30 minutes from Baltimore Washington International Airport, our campus is easily accessible to boys from across the country and worldwide. Families who live closer to campus also may choose a boarding experience for their sons, allowing them to gain independence without being overtaxed by long commutes and busy schedules. And families are close enough to attend games, concerts and on-campus events.
THE POWER OF OUR SMALL SCHOOL
Boys’ Latin is small by design because nearly two centuries of all-boys education has taught us that a close community builds a foundation of confidence, of compassion and of character. Here, every student is known and valued. Our teachers get to know each boy, learning what drives him, what activities he enjoys and what books he loves.
At Boys’ Latin, all students have the opportunity to participate in clubs, the arts, robotics and athletics without conflict. And, we leverage the power of a small community. Because, unlike larger schools where students compete for limited spots on teams, in plays, or within student government, we create space. Space for many leaders, rather than just a few.
