What is Coastal Design? We tend to think of shells and fish accents, but how about something a little more updated? Coastal design should always be welcoming and informal – think of where you would want to relax after a day on the water. If you’re lucky there is a view of water, boats, or beach.
Want to have that coastal look without the kitsch? Here are five ways to achieve the updated coastal look:
1
Coastal design is casual and welcoming, not overbearing. No need for lots of patterns and fussy decorating. Solids with a lot of texture work well with the occasional pattern mixed in. If you have a great view, make that the focal point, and the furnishings can support it.
2
Easy care is essential – who wants to be at the coast only to worry about spills? This cream-colored sofa is upholstered in a performance fabric, and spills just wipe right off! Rugs are low pile for easy vacuuming and polypropylene for stain resistance.
3
Think outside the box! Nothing says coastal more than a bedswing – so why not hang it inside where there is a great view so you can enjoy this napping spot all year around? This one is a double bed – great for last minute guests to spend the night as well.
4
Details make the difference! Check out the rope accents on this side table! A collection of colorful stones collected during paddling expeditions is displayed in a glass container. Summery linen fabric pillow is bordered with a natural jute trim.
5
You can’t go wrong with blue and white! The key is to make sure there is lots of texture, and also some warm colors – here the honey brown wood and bamboo roman shades brings warmth to the blue and cream palette.
