Regenerative Orthopedics and Sports Medicine (ROSM), a local orthopedic practice, offered advanced minimally invasive therapy at no cost to five special operations veterans on May 17, in honor of Memorial Day. The event was a collaborative effort with Lipogems, an Atlanta-based biotechnology company that donated the materials used in these FDA-cleared procedures.
“We will use the latest FDA-cleared technology, which has an over ten-year history of safety and efficacy, to repair chronic orthopedic injuries and avoid joint replacement surgery. I recently used these same techniques on my Dad’s arthritic knees, so you know I trust it,” said retired United States Army Colonel Dr. Sean Mulvaney, who donated his time for the event.
Dr. Mulvaney leads ROSM’s Annapolis office, which opened a little more than a year ago. He was a Navy SEAL officer for nine years before becoming an Army physician. Over more than 30 years of service, he became one of the nation’s most distinguished military physicians and started the Department of Defense’s regenerative medicine program more than ten years ago.
In 2008, he was the first military physician with hospital credentials in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow concentrate for the repair of musculoskeletal and spine injuries. He has also used adipose tissue or fat for the repair of chronic orthopedic injuries for more than nine years.
Recently, CBS 60 Minutes’ Bill Whitaker interviewed Dr. Mulvaney for an upcoming segment about another project he devoted his time toward. Dr. Mulvaney is a well-known medical researcher for his publications using a technique called the Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) to alleviate Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This procedure, which a 60 Minutes crew filmed for the segment, involves injecting anesthetic around the nerve that controls the body's “fight or flight” nervous system, which in multiple studies significantly improved PTSD symptoms.
Dr. Mulvaney isn’t the only veteran among ROSM’s physicians. Dr. John Ferrell III, one of the practice’s founders and one of four current owners, served seven years in the Navy in the Norfolk area and aboard the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier. Additionally, Dr. Mazzola of ROSM’s Boulder, Colorado office attended medical school on an Air Force scholarship and went on to treat the next generation of Air Force officers as a team physician at the Air Force Academy.
“My Navy experience was crucial to my career. I learned leadership skills that I employ on a daily basis. Anytime we can give back to the service members who protect our country, it is an honor for the ROSM team,” said Dr. Ferrell.
