Knees at Battle Creek.
Start your adventure at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, a 100-acre nature sanctuary that recalls a time 100,000 years ago when cypress swamps were common over large parts of the region and now-extinct animals like mammoths roamed the land. New features include a recently renovated quarter-mile boardwalk trail through the cypress swamp, as well as a newly remodeled nature and education center. For more fun, check out the fantastic outdoor programs offered by the Calvert County Natural Resources Division at Battle Creek and other local parks.
Next, visit Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (JPPM) to roam the 560-acre grounds along the scenic Patuxent River. The park boasts more than 65 identified archaeological sites and 9,000 years of documented human occupation. Fun, new family-oriented additions to JPPM include an outdoor, nature play space complete with a giant nest that kids can climb on to their hearts’ content. Or check their calendar for family-friendly events or educational programs. If you’d rather explore on your own, there are a number of hiking trails on site!
