On the Water
Water is nature’s mirror for the sun and when the two meet, it’s a match made in photographic heaven. Kent County’s 209 miles of shoreline offer many locations for the perfect shot. Crouch along the banks of rivers and creeks to spot a great blue heron enjoying a meal; stroll waterfront promenades, wharfs and piers to catch a couple walking hand-in-hand or wander the docks of local marinas throughout the county for stylish nautical shots.
If you want more offshore shots, step aboard the Chester River Packet, a 65-foot, 1920s-style classic tour boat, which departs from the Chestertown waterfront. The company offers cruises for groups of 10 or more through the end of December. Reservations can be booked in advance, online. For those who like to get up-close and personal with their photographic subjects, reserve a trip with Sultana Education Foundation for a paddle tour through the end of October or early November (weather permitting). Or bring your own canoe or kayak with your waterproof case in hand.
In the Wild
Capture the wilder side of nature, from woodlands to wetlands. Set your camera on zoom or, better yet, have a telephoto lens handy while you roam the trails of Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge or wade the nearby island waters where deer, fox and migrating waterfowl are prevalent. Similar sights await you at Sassafras Natural Resource Management Area and neighboring Turner’s Creek Park.
Fall is also the perfect time for lovers to frolic the open fields of Kent County in search of a flawless photo to announce their upcoming nuptials.
Around Town
Established as a bustling port in 1706, Chestertown continues to represent early America with historic streets lined with quaint shops and colonial buildings.
Thriving with a vibrant arts and cultural scene, eclectic shops, and charming inns, Chestertown is a photographer’s paradise. There is a wealth of opportunities to capture an artist at work through the expansive storefront windows that line the streets of Chestertown’s historic downtown.
Just a few minutes south, in Rock Hall, immerse yourself into the throngs of a seaside hamlet that’s reminiscent of a timeless postcard. Catch sight of many of the town’s original structures transporting you back to an era that depicted the life and times of a working waterfront town.
On the Farm
Change your camera settings from sepia and black-and-white back to normal to capture the vibrant colors and life on Kent County’s farms. Slip on your “wellies” for a jaunt through the fields or for you-pick fruits and vegetables. Don’t forget to zoom in for a close-up of plump berries and heirloom tomatoes.
Few images are more elegant than a glass of wine or more romantic than rows of grapes on the trellised fields of a vineyard. Family-operated Crow Vineyard & Farm cultivates a variety of grapes to produce its award-winning wines while also raising grass-fed Angus cattle and other farm animals who are always ready for their close-ups!
For the equestrian lover, get up close and personal with the horses at Airy Hill Stables, a beautiful horse farm just outside of Chestertown. The expansive and bucolic fields provide a backdrop for a family photograph that can be cherished for years to come.
