For Annapolitan boaters, there’s nothing more indecent than wearing socks with boat shoes…and nothing more cathartic than burning them in a bonfire on the beach at the start of spring. On Saturday, March 24, over 1,000 guests of the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park celebrated the spring equinox and the beginning of boating season by burning their winter socks at the Annapolis Oyster Roast & Sock Burning. The event was sold out for the fourth year in a row. Live music was provided by The Eastport Oyster Boys, a popular local band.
A shucking contest provided a chance for competitors to demonstrate their shucking prowess. Attendees who purchased the People’s Choice ticket participated in an exclusive tasting contest in which local restaurants and catering companies compete for the title of Best Oyster Dish.
There were plenty of oysters and drinks for all. The afternoon also included fun activities and exhibits highlighting the area’s unique maritime heritage and the importance of the oyster to the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
