Wye River Upper School filled its renovated building with nearly 300 guests on Saturday, November 1st, for its Gala, “If These Walls Could Talk, A Walk Through Time.” The evening was a cele ation of both the restoration of the Armory into the new home for Wye River Upper School (WRUS) as well as the rich history of the structure. Guests dressed in their finest attire and enjoyed an evening of dinner and dancing.
The gala was chosen as the setting to honor Governor Harry Hughes for his support of WRUS and his history of environmental leadership. Wye River Upper School presented Governor Hughes with a proclamation officially announcing the Harry R. Hughes Environmental Studies Endowment Fund.
“In honor of the Governor's commitment to the State of Maryland, the Chesapeake Bay and its resources, we intend to use these funds to enhance his well-acclaimed legacy of sensible environmental stewardship for generations to come.” says John Devlin, director of the Board of Trustees. “The Board of Trustees is proud to seed the initial fund and hope to grow it to a healthy endowment that will support environmental studies in perpetuity.”
Each year, a portion of the fund's interest will support Wye River Upper School activities, such as partnerships with environmental agencies, experiential learning opportunities in environmental renewal and other innovative ways to include WRUS students in keeping Maryland green.
