ROTARY CLUB OF ST. MICHAELS GIFTS $1,000 TO CARE PACKS
The Rotary Club of St. Michaels presented Megan Cook of the Care Packs organization with a $1,000 check on Wednesday, November 11th. Currently, Care Packs is producing 350 food bags a month and reaches only a portion of children who would benefit from the added nutrition. “Children are identified as presenting with some level of food insecurity by either hoarding food in their backpacks or visiting the nurse’s office regularly complaining of hunger or headaches,” Cook stated. The children who receive Care Packs are nominated by an agent in the school system that sees consistent signs of food related anxiety. All children who are selected already qualify for Free and Reduced Priced Meals (F.A.R.M). Nearly 44 percent of students in Talbot County qualify for F.A.R.M. and food insecurity is on the rise (a 27 percent increase since 2010). Moreover, 140 homeless students were enrolled in Talbot County Public Schools during the 2015 school year.
